What is a business model?

There is a lot of discussion about what actually is a business model. In general we see a business model as the way an organization makes money in order to sustain itself. A business model consists of the following elements:

• Customer and Market segment: the target customer and market of the organization
• Products and services: the products and/or services offered to the customer
• Value network: the position of the organization in the value network including suppliers, partners, complementers, and customers
• Competitive advantage: the way an organization distinguishes itself from and hold advantage over competitors
• Revenue model: the way an organization generates financial income for its products and services
